Canfield couple face animal cruelty charges

A Canfield couple pleaded not guilty Wednesday to animal cruelty charges in what the dog warden called the worst case of animal abuse he has seen in 30 years.

Brian and Betsy Spin are charged with two counts of child endangering and nine counts of animal cruelty.

Canfield police found two children, two cats and ten dogs living in the house at 535 Brookpark.

Police said the house was filled with garbage and waste, as well as urine and feces covering the floor and diseased dogs that died while being transported to a shelter.

Chief Chuck Colucci said officers were most concerned with the two boys, ages two and seven.

"Our primary concern was the children living in such deplorable conditions, with feces on the floor and urine on the floor and the floor is actually saturated in urine and feces," Colucci said.

Interim dog warden Dave Nelson said the animals were severely diseased.

"Some of the dogs had tumor spots all over, mange all over them," Nelson said.

He said part of one of the dogs ears had fallen off.

Both children were taken into state custody and the home has been labeled uninhabitable.
