Election 2009: Key races

Voters head to the polls Tuesday to vote on a handful of key issues.

Polls opened at 6:30 a.m. and will remain open until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night.

21 News will bring you complete election coverage beginning at 8 p.m. with Bob Black and Cindy Mathews, as well as online at WFMJ.com as results come into the newsroom.

Ohio's Issue 3, which would allow for casinos to be built in several major cities throughout the state, has led to a surge in early voting.

A key issue in Mahoning county is a half percent sales tax renewal.

Controversy over the wording of Issue 4 created some confusion, but the issue is a renewal, not a new tax.

Another high-profile issue in Mahoning county is a 1-mill renewal levy for the library system, which has faced cuts in state funding.

Columbiana county voters will also decide on a renewal levy of one percent.

In Trumbull county, voters will decide on two license tax fees, which would be $5 each.

The revenue from the fees would be used to repair and construct bridges and roads in the county.

There are also some school levies on the ballot.

Austintown is asking voters to approve a 2.9 mill bond issue, which would be used to construct new buildings.

The Mathews school district is also asking voters to pass a bond issue for the construction of a new school building.

Weathersfield residents will vote on an 8.4 mill bond issue, which would be used to add to the Seaborn elementary school and tear down the middle school.

Other districts with daily operations levies on the ballot include Canfield, Lakeview, Liberty, McDonald, Southington and Leetonia.

In Youngstown, mayor Jay Williams is opposed by three write-in candidates.

In Campbell, mayor John Dill faces opposition from George N. Krinos for his seat.

Seats up for grabs in Warren include council-at-large, as well as the fourth and sixth ward council seats.

Austintown, Boardman, Canfield, Poland, Liberty and Howland will all vote for trustees.
