Rally against fracking collects signatures for initiative on the May primary ballot

Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - People who are against fracking and injection wells collected signatures to put an initiative on the May primary ballot.

A rally on Saturday in Youngstown kicked off the campaign.

Dozens of citizens who are concerned about all of the environmental issues surrounding the gas drilling industry gathered at First Unitarian Universalist Church of Youngstown.

The rally kicked off Frack Free America's petition campaign. They are trying to collect enough signatures from Youngstown voters to get a Community Bill of Rights issue on the May 7th primary ballot.

The charter amendment initiative has already passed in other Ohio municipalities, including Mansfield.

Earthquake activity throughout 2011 has had citizens worried about injection wells in Youngstown. They are also fearful of the toxins produced by fracking.

The group is using the symbol of the cow, equating it to the canary in the cave that coal miners used to find toxins.

"Cows are dying because there have been frack water spills at the surface and they've drunk the water," said concerned citizen Lynn Anderson.

Saturday's event attracted the attention of NHK World Television, based out of Japan.

Frack Free America believes that the issue of local control deserves to be on the ballot, whether or not you support gas and oil drilling.

"Somebody wants to come and vote against it on May 7th, that's their choice. But let's practice Democracy. People love the right to vote, so let's use that citizen right to vote for this," said Susie Beiersdorfer, Frack Free America.
