Newton Falls Council approves water rate increase

NEWTON FALLS, Ohio- Newton Falls residents can expect their water bills to increase 36-percent over the next five years.

City Council recently passed the increase to pay for upgrades that were mandated by the EPA several years ago.

City Manager Jack Haney tells 21 News that Newton Falls had no other choice than to pay a debt service for the costs incurred, or else the debt would've gone to an outside agency, that could've charged much higher rates on the improvement costs.

"They were necessary upgrades," says Haney. "the EPA mandated we do not have a choice. So they made the necessary steps, did the upgrades and now we have to pay for them."

The first incremental increase of 16-percent begins this month.
