Rescue groups get a break on dog adoptions in Mahoning County

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Mahoning County's new dog warden has a plan to ease the number of dogs that are being cared for at the county's Dog Pound and Adoption Center.

Mahoning County Commissioners agreed to cut the fee for rescue organizations to adopt the animals in half from $50 to $25.

Dog Warden Matt Ditchey said rescue groups provide care for animals that may otherwise have a difficult time finding a home.  "The rescue groups are taking the dogs that generally have issues with them. They're sick, they're shy. The general public isn't really gravitating towards those types of dogs. And the dogs can be rehabilitated and they can be adopted after time, but they need some work and the rescue groups specialize in that, so we're trying to get more dogs out of the pound alive," Ditchey said.

Ditchey said he will personally pledge to pay the adoption fees for 50 dogs in order to keep them from being euthanized.
