500 jobs could be lost in downtown Youngstown if U.S. Postal Service closes processing center

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Five hundred jobs could be moved out of downtown Youngstown if the U.S. Postal Service closes its processing center there.

The Postal Service says it's losing money and proposes moving distribution offices here and New Castle to Pittsburgh.

Most of the jobs would be transferred, but about 100 workers could lose their jobs.

Congress managed to delay the final decision until May.

"A lot of us still aren't convinced that there's the level of shortfall that they say there is. There's a lot of money coming out of the postal service and forced to go into their pensions, which are already very secure. And it makes it appear that there's a bigger cut that needs to happen than there actually does," said Valley Congressman Tim Ryan.

The public is invited to a hearing on the proposed shutdown from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Boardman Performing Arts Center.
