DETROIT (AP) - General Motors Co. says its U.S. sales fell 6 percent in January compared to a strong month a year ago.
GM said Wednesday that car sales were up 13 percent, led by the new subcompact Chevrolet Sonic and the Chevrolet Cruze. But the company saw weaker sales of crossovers like the Buick Equinox and GMC Acadia. Pickup truck sales also fell 6 percent.
Ford says that sales rose 7 percent in January on strong demand for small cars and SUVs. Sales of the Ford Focus compact car were up 60 percent over last January, while sales of the Ford Escape small SUV were up 24 percent. Ford is replacing the Escape with a new version later this year, and sales have been strong for months as customers take advantage of deals on the outgoing model.
Chrysler says its January sales in the U.S. rose 44 percent over a year ago on gains from its Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram brands. Chrysler says it was the company's best January tally in four years. Sales of the Chrysler brand led the way with an 81 percent increase. Chrysler 200 sedan sales were eight times higher than a year ago.
