The U.S. Census Bureau Released 1940 Census Data

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - We now have a better idea of what life was like during the Great Depression.

The U.S Census Bureau released images Monday morning of more than 132 million census forms from 1940.

The surveys collected information pertaining to things like employment, income and education.

Local librarian, Tim Seman, says the 1940 census was first time many of our ancestors were counted.

"It's interesting to be able to look at maybe the spirit of Youngstown in the 1940s, to look at how vibrant it was. It was one of the best Midwest cities to live in and it's now, we can look at how it is improving, how things are coming back," said Tim Seman.

By law, census data is kept under wraps for 72 years before it can be made public. For information on how to access your family records click here.
