YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) - Temperatures hit record highs in several Ohio cities Thursday and got close in other areas ahead of a cooler weekend.

The National Weather Service said temperatures in the Mahoning Valley, including the cities of Youngstown and Warren, hit 87 degrees, breaking the previous record of 86 degrees set in 1942.

Temperatures in Cleveland hit 88 degrees late in the afternoon, breaking the old mark of 85 set in 1949.

Toledo broke its 1938 record of 87 degrees by one degree.

Columbus came close to a record, with its temperature of 88 degrees falling short by just one degree.

A cold front was expected to bring highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s for much of the state by Saturday.
