Proposed Shell tax break worth $67 million a year

Updated:

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Gov. Tom Corbett is proposing tax credits worth $67 million a year for Shell Oil Co.'s planned petrochemical refinery in western Pennsylvania.

Corbett has not publicly discussed the tax break, but a top aide to Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati on Monday confirmed the report from the online news service Capitolwire.

The aide, Drew Crompton, says lawmakers will want assurances that the plant will be built in Pennsylvania and that the promised thousands of new jobs will materialize. He says the bill will be introduced this week.

Pennsylvania competed with Ohio and West Virginia for the planned ethane-cracking plant that would convert ethane from natural-gas drilling into more profitable chemicals. Shell announced in March that it had signed a land-option agreement for a site 35 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.
