YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - It's been 50 years since Dr. Edmund Massullo performed the Valley's first open heart surgery at Saint Elizabeth Hospital.
The first patient, Betty Rushton who was two at the time, was on hand Monday along with Dr. Massullo's family as a waiting room was named in honor of the doctor.
"The commitment that Dr. Massullo started; the commitment to quality, to patient safety, to scholarship and publishing. Within a year of that first surgery they were publishing articles in the Journal of the Society of Chest Physicians. That's always been part of our story here at St. Elizabeth's," said Humility of Mary Health Partners CEO Don Koenig.
Koenig says the hospital system prides itself on being the local leader in cardiovascular care.
