PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Pirates are turning to a Hall of Famer to help the young club deal with the new pressures of a pennant race.

Former second baseman Bill Mazeroski will join the Pirates on the bench during their 3-game series with the Minnesota Twins this week. Mazeroski, who often advises second baseman Neil Walker during spring training, accepted an invitation from manager Clint Hurdle to do a little regular-season work, as well.

The 75-year-old Mazeroski, who helped Pittsburgh win World Series titles in 1960 and 1971, says the Pirates have finally turned the corner after 19 consecutive losing seasons. Pittsburgh began Tuesday 34-31, 3½ games behind first-place Cincinnati.

Former Pittsburgh outfielder Bill Virdon will also be on the bench this week for the Pirates.
