Youngstown residents speak out against fracking

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Youngstown residents are speaking out against fracking.

Three residents spoke at Youngstown City Council on Wednesday night calling for a ban on fracking in Youngstown, the Meander Reservoir and Mill Creek Park.

They presented a citizen's rights based ordinance and petitions signed by more than 400 residents who oppose fracking.

One speaker said government needs to protect the area's watershed. "Toxifying the watershed will cost far more than the economic benefits of fracking the watershed. Legally the city is in jeopardy of lawsuits should damage occur to the watershed," said Susie Beiersdorter, a geologist.

The speakers also called for local government to protect the right to clean air and water and a healthy environment.
