Penguins pleased after busy, successful draft

Updated:

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins said goodbye to 1 of their Big Three when they traded center Jordan Staal to the Carolina Hurricanes during the first round of the NHL draft Friday.

General manager Ray Shero, however, doesn't expect it will take long to find a replacement.

The Penguins acquired young center Brandon Sutter as part of the deal to ship Staal to Carolina. They also sent defenseman Zbynek Michalek to Phoenix later Friday, creating enough salary cap space to be a player when free agency begins next week.

Throw in a pick-heavy draft that included highly touted defensemen Derrick Pouliot and Olli Maatta, and Shero believes the Penguins are in a great position heading into the summer.
