Veterans retraining assistance program

Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - There's new hope on the horizon for unemployed veterans.

Senator Sherrod Brown made a stop at Mahoning County's Veterans Service Commission in Youngstown hoping to bring awareness to the new Veterans Retraining Assistance Program.

For veterans between the ages of 35 and 60 it gives them the opportunity to pursue training for new careers in high demand occupations.

Pedro Colon, Jr. is among the first in the Mahoning Valley to be accepted to the program. Colon says, "I'm going to attend the Mahoning County Career and Technical center on a full-time basis, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., in the Medical Assistance Program. Which is what I did in the military. It's going to be a life-changing thing for me. It's going to help me save my home, and help me find gainful employment in just a short year and I intend to do whatever it takes to graduate."

You can contact Mahoning County's Veterans Service Commission to set up an appointment, to fill out an application, and to find out more about the careers that qualify for the training grants.
