Study highlights the value of the arts in the Valley

Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The results of an economic impact study are in and it shows the arts have a big impact on the Valley.

According to a study released by the Power of the Arts Advisory Council, the Mahoning Valley's arts and cultural industry generates over 25 million dollars in economic activity each year.

The study also shows the arts support 930 local jobs.

Twenty-seven non-profit arts and culture organizations helped contribute to the study. Local arts leaders say the numbers prove that the arts can aid in business attraction and retention.

"The local arts scene is very strong and vibrant and the local economy is certainly reliant upon those numbers. I think right now what we want to do is take that information and spread the good news to the Mahoning Valley and that it is good business to support arts and culture in the community," said Dr. Bryan DePoy, Dean of the Youngstown State University College of Fine & Performing Arts.

In addition, the study shows the arts industry also returns over 2.5 million dollars to local and state coffers in the form of tax revenue each year.
