YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Kids in Youngstown have the opportunity to stay busy this summer, and more importantly off the streets.
Operation Redemption is a move to rebuild the city's south-side after two tragic deaths near St. Dominic's Church. Nearly two years later the project continues, starting with the children.
"The kids are the future, and the kids are good they just need direction," said Father Gregory Maturi. "They need good people to be involved in their lives."
"Not only listen to them, but then follow through of what they're asking of you," said Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Tony Perrone.
And that's exactly what they're doing. St. Dominic's Church is teaming up with Horizon Academy and Boys and Girls Club of Youngstown to provide the area youth with an open gym.
"When you engage them and make them an active part of their own development, the more likely they are to stick with it, believe in you, and then they'll do anything you ask of them," Perrone said.
The open gym is free to the community and offered at Horizon Academy every Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Afterwards kids are transported to the Boys and Girls Club for lunch and more activities.
