YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A slew of semi-truck accidents along Interstate 80 running from Trumbull County to the Pennsylvania line have some wondering if there is a single factor involved in all of these crashes.
On July 10th a tractor trailer blew a tire and flipped on Interstate 80 in Hubbard. On July 6th a truck careened out of control and killed another driver on I-80 in Girard. On May 29th a truck carrying aluminum coils crashed over an embankment in Hubbard.
These are just a few of the truck and car crashes the Ohio State Highway Patrol has investigated. Sergeant Bill Bancroft says there is not one common denominator in the accidents.
"There is not one single determining factor to say we have a problem on Interstate 80. Most of the crashes can be attributed to inattention," Bancroft said.
In the July 10th FedEx trailer incident, pot holes and a blow out led to loss of control. In the July 6th accident that killed a driver, OSHP says the driver of the semi-truck says he fell asleep at the wheel and others were due to failure to control or unforeseen circumstances.
Three of the 25 accidents from April through now on the 14 mile stretch of roadway involved deer; a fourth accident was due to an animal.
Bancroft says the construction is designed by ODOT engineers with safety in mind and has not been a factor in the accident.
Bancroft adds that troopers are always on the lookout for speeding trucks and cars or those breaking the law.
The best way to stay safe is to be alert behind the wheel, without distractions and to wear your seat belt.
