Ex-coach, wife enter special probation program in connection with youth league theft

Updated:

NEW CASTLE, Pa. (AP) - A former youth football coach and his wife have entered a special probation program on a charge that they misappropriated money from the western Pennsylvania program they once headed.

The New Castle News (http://bit.ly/NMgupD) reports Monday that 47-year-old Frank Bongivengo and his 46-year-old wife, Karen, have entered the program on a charge of misappropriation of entrusted property from the New Castle Youth Football program.

State prosecutors say the couple used $3,600 from the league's bank account to avoid overdrafts on their personal checking account and other personal expenditures in 2009.

Frank Bongivengo will be in the program for a month and his wife for six months. Their records will be expunged if they complete the probation without incident.

Frank Bongivengo has since resigned as head coach of New Castle High School's football team, but still teaches there.
