Pool sales making a big splash during summer heat wave

Updated:

YOUGNSTOWN, Ohio - This steamy summer is having a positive impact on swim pool companies; many report a record breaking year just like the hot temperatures.

Whether it's the heat or a sign that the economy is improving, the fact is pool sales are making a splash.

"This is the best year I've ever had, I've ever seen," said Great Escape's Andy Shobel.

21 News spoke with a number of pool companies and the story seems the same. It's a record breaking year.

Burnett Pools says they've installed 60% more above ground pools compared to last year. Seven Seas in Hermitage have sold about 30% more pools.

So why the surge?

"A lot of people are using their backyard now as their vacation, with a pool," said Seven Seas Kim Cione.

Pool owner Drew Neider purchased his family's swimming pool five years ago and said with what they've saved in vacation money it's almost paid for itself.

"Everybody is here and having a good time. It costs me a little extra in burgers though," Neider laughed.

If a family of four spends $2,500 for a week's vacation, an above ground pool, costing roughly $7,000, would pay for itself in less than three years. An in ground pool could be paid off in 14 years.

And it's not just families looking to stay home that are spending.

Shobel, who's been in the pool business for more than 25 years, said customers receiving cash payments for shale leases are now investing big time.

"One customer would come in and buy a pool and spend $4,000," Shobel said. "They are coming in and buying a pool and a spa, or a pool and a patio, and spending $10,000 to 12,000."

If you're looking to have a pool installed this year, be warned many places are booked up and are now scheduling for spring of 2013.
