Doctors warn against layering shapewear garments

Updated:

AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - Celebrities are in the business of looking good and while many of them won't admit all of their beauty secrets, some of them are very open about their love for shapewear.

"Shapewear gives you that chic look. It is a combination of spandex, Lycra; all of those good technologies rolled into one to keep you looking smooth and to keep you looking great," said Melissa Walsh with Dillard's.

Award winning singer Adele has been a vocal supporter of shapewear. In an interview with Matt Lauer, she confessed to layering "three or four pairs" on the night of the Grammy's. Although, she had to take a couple of pairs off just to sing.

That doesn't surprise Humility of Mary Health Partners Dr. Nicholas Proia who says these garments temporarily shift organs.

"It does cause something we refer to as a restrictive ventilatory defect where all of a sudden the patient doesn't have lung disease, but they can't breathe because they can't expand their chest," said Dr. Nicholas Proia.

Adele isn't the only celebrity to openly admit layering on the Lycra, others to have fessed up. And the trend isn't just limited to women with fame and fortune.

"We are seeing more and more women coming in complaining of things like nerve problems, circulatory problems, leg numbness, leg pain, gastrointestinal problems such as acid reflux and even bladder and vaginal infections," said Humility of Mary Health Partners Dr. Angelina Rodriquez.

Dr. Rodriquez says concerns have risen over the excessive use or inappropriate use shapewear. She recommends wearing one pair at a time and only in moderation.
