More than 70,000 customers in Ohio without power

Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - More than 70,000 customers in central and southwest Ohio are without power following a string of storms in the area.

American Electric Power-Ohio says at least 36,000 customers are experiencing an outage in the Columbus area and surrounding counties after the Wednesday storms. Duke Energy in southwest Ohio is reporting more than 33,000 customers with outages in several counties near Cincinnati.

AEP-Ohio says the storms knocked utility pole equipment down, but they expect power to be restored by Wednesday night.

Dayton Power & Light says about 1,300 customers are without power due to wind and lightening hitting its transformers.

The new outages come just weeks after a set of powerful storms knocked out electricity for hundreds of thousands of customers facing a heat wave across the state.
