YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -A tuberculosis levy that has been collected in Mahoning County for 36 years is up for renewal.

Health officials say cases of tuberculosis are still being detected in the county and support for testing programs is still very important to community health, especially with more out of state students attending Youngstown State University and the anticipated influx of people connected to the shale boom.

"For every person diagnosed with active TB, by the time they're diagnosed they have infected eight and half other individuals," said Dr. John Venglarcik, Director of the county TB Clinic.

The TB levy is for one-tenth of one mill and costs the owner of a home valued at $100,000 only $1.20 a year, or 10 cents a month.
