Mahoning Valley Scrappers Press Release

Scrappers unable to solve Yankees pitching.

Updated:

NILES, Ohio - What a difference a day makes. Last night the Mahoning Valley Scrappers offense put together their highest output of hits on the season with 17.

On Wednesday night they couldn't match that total as they fell to the Staten Island Yankees by a final of 8-2.

The offense was never able to solve starting pitcher Gabriel Encinas. Encina multiple times was able to escape jams. He allowed 2 unearned runs in the 1st inning when Mitch Nilsson grounded a ball to firstbasemen Saxon Butler with 2 outs. Butler's flip to Encinas covering was off line and allowed 2 runs to score. Those would be the only runs the Scrappers would get all night.

The offense grounded into 3 double plays in 3 consecutive innings. After the 4th inning, the only threat Mahoning Valley was able to mount was a 1 out double in the 9th by Joe Sever. He would be stranded on 3rd.

Jacob Lee started for the Scrappers and took his first loss of the season to drop his record to 4-1.

Lee cruised through the first 2 innings but the Yankees got to him in the 3rd. After loading the bases with 1 out, Butler lined a double down the right field line. 3 runs came around to score on the double when the ball was misplayed in right field.

The Scrappers would keep the score close until the top of the 9th inning. Entering the inning with a 5-2 score the Yankees got their first 2 batters on base with a single and a walk. Then NYPL homerun leader, Saxon Butler launched his 10th homerun of the season over the indoor batting cages behind the Scrappers bullpen in right field.
