YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The city of Youngstown is teaming up with Youngstown City Schools to give young people a positive place to spend their time during non-school hours.

The Youngstown Community Initiative to Reduce Violence or "CIRV" will open Wilson Middle and Taft Elementary Schools for youth programs after school and on the weekends.

The police department and Juvenile Justice Center will also be collaborating in providing a safe place for kids.

"They'll be able to play, run around and burn off some energy. But more importantly, there will be people telling them about bullying, self-esteem, values. So there will be a character-building component to this as well. As well as free meals, snacks and things of that nature," said DeMaine Kitchen, Administrative Assistant for Youngstown Mayor Chuck Sammarone.

Kitchen says the schools were built with the dual purpose of serving as community centers. So far they have not been used in that capacity until now.
