Columbiana County recorder's office warning of a deed scam

Updated:

COLUMBIANA COUNTY, Ohio - The Columbiana County Recorder's office is warning land owners about a deed scam.

Columbiana County recorder Craig Brown is warning land owners that a company called National Deed Service has been contacting residents and offering to provide copies of deeds for a cost of $87.

Brown said there is potential that these types of scams could increase due to the shale boom.  "We did see on in 2009, early on that was similar to this.  Certainly the cost of the deed went up tremendously, it's about $30 more from when the last time they asked," said Brown, "It's possible you might see a lot more of this happen in the future."

The recorder's office charges 25 cents per page to make a self serve copy of a deed.  If you think you are being scammed, contact the Better Business Bureau.
