Brookfield Schools considering income tax

Updated:

BROOKFIELD, Ohio - The Brookfield School District is looking for additional taxation for education, but the latest proposal won't involve property taxes.

Since being placed under fiscal watch in 2006, Brookfield Schools have made significant cutbacks, but still face a growing deficit without new revenue.

After three months of study, a committee of school leaders, staff and citizens are ready to suggest the solution is not another levy on property taxes, but a short term income tax.

"It's the recommendation of the committee to try that one percent income tax. Put it in the hands of the voters, limit it to five year term so we can put a five year plan in place," said Superintendent Tim Saxton.

Without new revenue, the district could slip into fiscal emergency, which is something they hope to avoid.

"Which means a state panel would come in and potentially make any decisions after that and we'd lose local control," Saxton said.

Instead of more taxes on property owners, the income tax would not affect seniors on fixed incomes, but those people who are working and more likely to have children in school.

Nona Bernane is one of those parents; her son Austin will start school next year.

"I think it's a good idea. This way the schools will benefit, hopefully the kids will benefit and get a good education," Bernane said.

If approved, Brookfield would join 182 other Ohio school districts with income taxes in place including these local districts; Springfield, Sebring, United, Columbiana and Crestview.
