The Niles Historical Society celebrates the 150th birthday of the Ward-Thomas House

Updated:

NILES, Ohio - The city of Niles is celebrating the 150 birthday of the historic Ward-Thomas home.

The 14 room estate was built in 1862 by industrialist James Ward.

When the Niles Historical Society was entrusted to turn the home into a museum in 1979, it had very few pieces of furniture. The museum's curator says it's grown over the years thanks to donations from Niles residents.

"I think it is very important to that we know what our history is," said curator Audrey John. "It is important because people keep looking back at what happened in those earlier days and they begin to appreciate as they get older what has happened and how the history has changed the town and so on."

The Ward-Thomas Museum is open the first Sunday of each month from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
