Government figures show mass layoffs down in Ohio

Updated:

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - A newspaper reports that mass layoff announcements by employers in Ohio fell last year to 668 from a peak of 1,205 in 2009.

The Dayton Daily News said mass layoff announcements are those affecting at least 50 workers at a company.

Figures from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services show the total number of layoffs in the state dropped to 39,000 last year from nearly 115,000 in 2009.

The drops come amid sluggish economic growth and unemployment of 7.2% in Ohio.

A Chicago-based workforce consultant says a lot of the massive changes companies went through during the recession have been completed. He expects there are likely to be fewer bouts of big layoffs at large companies.
