Stand-up paddle boarding gaining popularity on local lakes and rivers

PORTERSVILLE, Pennsylvania -

Nestled between the trees, just 35 miles from Youngstown, sits Moraine State Park's Lake Arthur, the site of Healthy Living Reporter Kate Keller's first ever stand up paddle board lesson.

"If you want to stay dry you primarily want to stay right over that center point," said Ian Smith owner of SurfSUP Adventures.

He didn't have to tell her twice.

"Oh, that's ok now that I'm on," said Healthy Living reporter Kate Keller.

"Ok, so the paddle has T grip at the top and you want to focus on keeping your hands out nice and straight.  Yes, like that and give it a paddle," said Smith.

Smith launched his stand up paddle board business last August with the hope of bringing one of the fastest-growing water sports in the country to this area.

"I get everyone from your fitness people that want to do longer paddles and really get a good workout while we are out here. I also do stand up paddle board yoga so people that want to come out and enjoy nature and do yoga, as well, that is really fun."

Smith has had kids as young as six and adults into their sixties give the sport a try. He says the trip can be as vigorous or as laid back as you want to work the muscle groups from your toes on up.

"I think the best part about it is that it gets your workout outdoors. So, your are outdoors even in a calm setting.  You are using less so your arms and more so your core to help keep you stable and the paddling stroke actually engages your back a lot and as well as your lower body. So it is kind of surprising," said Smith.

For those that fall in love with the sport, the more advanced stand up paddle boarders, the sport can extend into winter.

"I paddle, stand up paddle board straight through the winter as well. Some of the winter sports that we do are, is in the white water when there is a lot of flow in the rivers. So, as long as you have the right gear your can go straight through the year, but I think the more sane population will start to peter out in October," said Smith.

If you would like to give standup paddle boarding a try, SurfSUP Adventures offers lessons, eco-tours, white water adventures and Zen and Yoga.
