Jones gets 92 years for murder of YSU student

Updated:

Youngstown, Ohio – The man convicted of killing a Youngstown State University student during an off-campus Super Bowl party last year has been sentenced to 92 years to life in prison for the crime.

Twenty-three-year old Columbus Jones was found guilty on Wednesday of the murder of 25 year old Jamail Johnson.

Johnson died as he was trying to usher others to safety after a fight broke out at the party and gunfire erupted. Eleven other people were injured.

The defendant did not react as the sentence was handed down by Judge John Durkin.

Johnson's mother, Shirley Hill, was in court for the sentencing. During a victim's impact statement to the court Hill said "there are no winners" as a result of her son's death. Speaking directly to his accused killer she said, "You had no right to take a life."

Johnson's aunt also spoke during the sentencing. Lynn Johnson said Jones will never be free, adding the "dissolution of your freedom ends today."

Johnson's murder shocked the YSU community. He was a senior at YSU when he was killed. Johnson was a well-known student who spent time mentoring children.

On Wednesday, Prosecutor Becky Doherty praised the young people who testified in the trial calling them "brave."

There are still four other defendants who face charges in the February 2011 shootings.
