Youngstown launches new online tool to track blight

Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Youngstown residents can now keep tabs on neighborhood eyesores through the city's website.

A few clicks of a mouse on the new Neighborhood Improvement page will provide a status of blighted homes on the demolition list.

Homes facing property code violations can be found by searching any specific address.

"For those residents who are computer savvy, it gives them the opportunity, 24 hours a day when no one answers or they're waiting on a call back, to access this information from their fingertips," said DeMaine Kitchen, Chief of Staff for Mayor Chuck Sammarone.

Using federal funds, the city hopes to demolish at least 1,000 blighted homes within the next year and a half. While it's a start, Mayor Sammarone says the city will soon need additional funds to tackle all of the vacant homes that need to be torn down.

Kitchen says the website should streamline the process and offer transparency for those who track the status of demolitions.

Residents who want to file complaints to begin the process for properties not listed can do so by filling out an online form.
