Preps underway for Youngstown shale expo

Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Business representatives from around the country are coming to Youngstown this week for the Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber's next big conference and expo on shale development.

Work is underway both inside and outside the Covelli Centre in preparation for the 2012 Utica and Natural Gas Conference and Expo.

Come Thursday, the main floor will be filled with more than 115 vendors and sponsors.

The Regional Chamber says the conference will give area companies the opportunity to learn how to be a part of the oil and gas industry and network with companies already in the field. "Part of the conference agenda is to get people in the room to talk about what's needed and how we as a local business community can facilitate any of the supply chain needs for mid-stream," said Eric Planey from the Youngstown-Warren Regional Chamber.

Planey says it's critical for the Valley to be ready for the mid-stream part of shale development when transportation and processing takes place.

Support and supply industries could attract new businesses. Jack McIntyre is with ASAP Industries a Louisiana based company that deals almost exclusively with the oil and gas industry. "If we move up here, which we probably will, it'll be in this area," McIntyre said.

And that will mean jobs. "It will start off with just ground entry jobs all the way up to professional jobs throughout the area," McIntyre said.

The Regional Chamber says the conference is another step toward the goal of having the Valley recognized as hub of mid-stream operations.

The event already has more than one thousand pre-registrations.
