WARREN, Ohio - For the first time in months, 12-hundred laid off steelworkers have hope for their future.

Chuck Betters, the new owner of Warren RG Steel, told a crowd of steelworkers on Thursday that while he has no intention of operating the mill, he is dedicated to finding someone who will and plans to invest in the winterizing of the plant.

Steelworkers feared if the plant was not properly winterized within the next couple of months the equipment would be damaged beyond repair.

"That's huge. If it's not winterized we will have nothing," said USW member Pat Mangan.

Betters explained he plans to use a number of the laid off steel workers to help with the winterizing process, and while it is no guarantee that by investing in the mill it will draw an owner, union members feel it's a step in the right direction.

"You can see they have hope now, they didn't have any hope before they just heard rumors," said USW member Nicholas Paetrella.

Betters has said he predicts the sale will be closed within the next couple of weeks. However, if they do not receive state support, they will have to re-evaluate their ability to fund the winterization process.
