Fracking protestors demonstrate in Girard

Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – While the shale expo was going in downtown Youngstown, detractors of the shale boom were gathered in another part of the Valley.

Protestors gathered in Girard on Thursday near one of several brine injection wells that was shut down following an earthquake believed to be linked to an injection well in Youngstown.

Demonstrators claim the state is trying to determine if that well, and others around it, could go back on line.

"The risks to our health, all living things health , and risk to the health of the planet is in danger with this unconventional gas drilling, of which the injection of toxic fracking waste is a big part," said Susie Beiersdorfer from Frack Free Mahoning Valley.

A representative of Ohio's Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management tells 21 News that operation of that well and others nearby are suspended indefinitely.
