YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Youngstown Mayor Chuck Sammarone says an efficiency study the city recently had done emphasizes the need to find new ways to generate money, including possibly leasing mineral rights to fund desperately needed demolition projects.
A proposed ordinance by the mayor to do just that became the source of heated debate Wednesday night.
On Thursday, State Senator Bob Hagan said he's glad the city is having a second reading on the issue, and he hopes it leads to public hearings and a referendum for the voters to decide.
"Certainly they want safe homes. They want crime to stop. They want the demolition to continue, but not at the expense of public parks, and our public land, and our people here in the valley," Hagan.
A second reading on the issue will be held on October 3rd. Mayor Sammarone says the vacant house problem is the number one complaint of those who live in the city.
