San Francisco 49ers are winners with kids at Valley hospital

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Members of the San Francisco 49ers win hands down with kids at a Valley hospital.

About fifteen 49ers showed up at Akron Children's Hospital Mahoning Valley, including quarter back Alex Smith. They served up ice cream and smiles to children at the hospital.

Team members, who volunteered their time, say they enjoy giving back. Offensive tackle Joe Staley says it's a great opportunity, adding the kids love seeing them as much as the players love meeting the kids.

Team members signed autographs and posed for pictures.

Coach Jim Harbaugh says the stop in Youngstown is a win, win situation for the kids and team adding the team members who take part get more out of this than the kids.

Harbaugh says the stop in Youngstown gives the team a unique opportunity to circle the wagons, get their mind set back to getting ready to play the next game.

Wide receiver AJ Jenkins said he cherishes memories when athletes would come to the playground in Jacksonville, Florida when he was a kid. Now he is in a position to give back. Jenkins adds the kids have a great time and so do the players.

Dr. John York, owner of the 49ers, says giving back to the community has always been important.

The 49ers Foundation has donated over 18 million dollars to support non-profits since it was formed 20 years ago, including 2.4 million last year.

York says the organization works in the Bay area and it mission is to keep kids safe, on track and in school. York says many players volunteer their time to do activities like this in the community.
