Social media to blame for cancellation of free gas giveaway in Warren

Updated:

WARREN, Ohio - Church leaders sponsoring Tuesday's free gas giveaway in Warren believe social media played a part in cancelling the event.

Believers Church planned to surprise customers at the Elm Road Sheetz by donating $17,000 worth of free gas.

The church hoped to keep the giveaway a secret until 3:00 p.m., but the word leaked out and traffic began crowding around the business six hours early.

Police arrived and the giveaway was canceled.

"People are people and in order to coordinate an event that big there had to be a few people that knew and it could have been anybody. Everybody has a friend, who has a friend. We did our very best to keep it closed, but just one person could have leaked it and before you know it it's a situation," said Joe Cameneti, Jr. from Believers Church.

Believers Church now plans to hand out $25 gas cards to random customers at various locations.
