Steelers to unveil Immaculate Reception Monument

Updated:

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers will unveil a monument to the Immaculate Reception a day before the 40th anniversary of the remarkable ricochet catch by Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris that led to the team's first-ever playoff victory.

The yet-to-be described monument will be unveiled Dec. 22 between Heinz Field and the Stage AE amphitheater. The spot marks where Harris caught the ball in what used to be Three Rivers Stadium, the concrete bowl razed to make room for Heinz Field.

Harris scored a touchdown after catching a Terry Bradshaw pass that referees ruled had bounced off Oakland Raiders defender Jack Tatum. The Steelers won the game 13-7 on Dec. 23, 1972 and have since won six Super Bowls.

Harris will be honored at halftime of the Dec. 23 game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
