Replacement says locked out refs criticized him

Updated:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - An NFL replacement referee from Maryland says he and other replacement refs were criticized for stepping in.

Marty Peters told The Capital of Annapolis that he and other replacement refs received emails from some locked out NFL officials criticizing the decision to serve as replacement officials. Peters said some of the emails said the decision would never be forgiven or forgotten. However, Peters says he hopes the bitterness over the decision will fade in time.

The Eastport resident says he earned nearly $30,000 in the seven weeks he was a replacement ref. Peters says that is how much he would make in five seasons as a college referee. NFL refs returned to the game Thursday night in Baltimore where the Ravens beat the Cleveland Browns.
