Phantoms score twice in final 50 seconds, win 4-3 in overtime

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – For 59 minutes the Des Moines Buccaneers looked the better team Saturday night at the Covelli Centre, but the best teams can take even the thinnest sliver of hope and find a way to win. Trailing 3-1 with their net empty, that's what the Youngstown Phantoms did.

JT Stenglein got it started, batting a rebound in with 51 seconds remaining, and 25 seconds later, Austin Cangelosi – no stranger to third period heroics – knotted it up, emerging out of the scrum and firing it home to force overtime. Then just 1:38 into the extra stanza, Dan Renouf floated a wrist shot through a screen to give the Phantoms a 4-3 win.

After getting his first USHL point Friday night, Luke Stork scored his first goal while Patrick Spano won his first career start, turning away 22 shots.

"I've never been a part of a game, as a player or coach, with two goals with the goalie pulled in the last minute to win it," head coach Anthony Noreen said. "It was fun – it was a special thing to be a part of."

For the second night in a row, the Phantoms came out of the gate slow and for the second night in a row, it cost them. Nearly 12 minutes in Zach Saar carried a puck in along the left-wing wall and threw a backhand shot on net. Spano made the initial save, but Axel Wemmenborn came crashing in put in the rebound to put Des Moines up 1-0.

Tanner Karty put the Bucs up two 5:43 into the second when he knocked in another rebound. Stork finally provided a spark for the Phantoms a little more than two minutes later. John Padulo carried the puck in across the blue line and sent a pass across the ice for Stork at the half-wall. The Pittsburgh, native fired a shot along the ice, beating Des Moines goaltender Nick Ellis to bring the Phantoms within one.

Wemmenborn sapped the momentum at the 9:52 mark when he intercepted a pass short-handed and shoved a backhand on net deflecting off the skate of a Phantoms defender and into the net. The Phantoms came out in the third with renewed energy, but their efforts bared no fruit until the final minute and a half, when Noreen used his timeout ahead of an offensive zone faceoff.

"We challenged every guy to have energy – to be up and positive on the bench," Noreen said. "Whether they were on the ice or on the bench, everyone needed to be up, stick to it and bring positive energy."

With 6-foot-4 Markus McCrea on for Spano, the Phantoms swarmed the Buccaneers and Cangelosi was able to knock the puck to Stenglein bring it within one. The Phantoms lost the ensuing center-ice draw, but were able to regain possession in time to pull Spano again and Cangelosi, did what he does best.

Noreen said it has gotten to the point, Boston College commit's clutch play no longer surprises him.

"No not at all," he said. "Austin just doesn't quit."

Noreen sent 15-year-old Kyle Connor out with Stork up front for the second shift in overtime and the

youngsters came up big in the big minutes. Connor corralled the puck on the half-wall and gave it to Renouf at the point and, with Stork parked in front of the net, the Pickering, Ontario, native put the game away.
