Early voting starts Tuesday in Ohio

Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Early voting in Ohio for the November 6th election begins Tuesday at 8:00 a.m.

Boards of elections have been preparing for the start of early voting and the extended hours that go with it. The hours were set forth in a directive from the Ohio Secretary of State's office.

"We'll be open eight to five for the first three weeks and then the last two weeks before the election we'll be open eight to seven for early voting," said Mahoning County Elections Director Joyce Kale Pesta.

Ohioans can cast an early ballot by mail or in person without having to give a reason. Secretary of State Jon Husted says that as of last Friday more than 920,000 vote by mail requests have been received statewide. Kale Pesta says absentee voting is on the rise in Mahoning County.

"We have approximately 30,000 absentees in our office right now. Some are duplicates because there were two absentee applications sent, so we're still processing. Tomorrow we will be sending out approximately 20,000 absentee ballots," Kale Pesta said.

Trumbull County has 13,500 absentee requests and Columbiana County has 5,200. Those mail in ballots must be postmarked by the day before election day.

Currently there are no weekend hours for early voting, but there is a dispute over an attempt to have election boards open on the last weekend before Election Day.

"We're still waiting for a directive from the secretary of state's office to let us know what hours, if any, we're going to have on Saturday and Sunday prior to the election," said Deputy Elections Director Tom McCabe.

Political analyst expect turnout will decide this election. It will all come down to which party can motivate the most people to cast their ballot.
