Youngstown officials vote to seek gas drilling

Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) - Youngstown city council as voted to seek offers to lease city-owned land for gas and oil drilling - despite some heated opposition from people who oppose it.

Council voted 5-2 Wednesday to permit the city to seek drilling offers.

Some city council members wanted the city to wait until a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency progress report on the hydraulic fracturing drilling process - also known as fracking. The study's first progress report is planned for late this year.

About 50 people who oppose the drilling process because of environmental concerns showed up at the meeting to make their opinions known. Some said they will collect signatures on petitions to try to get the decision on drilling overturned.
