Economic upturn, auto bailout lift Dems in Midwest

Updated:

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) - Resurgent state economies and the federal government's 2009 bailout of Chrysler and General Motors are helping President Barack Obama and Democrats locked in close Senate races.

In Wisconsin, Republicans and Gov. Scott Walker spent nearly $59 million on ads leading up to the June recall vote telling voters that the state is on the economic upswing. That's a strong dose of good news in this Midwest state and helps incumbents.

In Indiana and Ohio, the auto bailout is crucial for jobs.

Two weeks to Election Day, Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has to convince voters to make a distinction between the policies in Washington and those in home states.
