Steelers' patience paying off after slow start

Updated:

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers aren't ready to call themselves Super Bowl contenders, even after knocking off the defending champs.

Though coach Mike Tomlin called Sunday's 24-20 triumph over the New York Giants "significant," he added the Steelers are just 5-3 midway through the season and still a work in progress.

That goes for the coach as well.

Tomlin admitted he made a mistake when he called for a fake field goal with the Steelers trailing by three in the fourth quarter. The play ended up going nowhere but Pittsburgh's defense forced the Giants to punt and the Steelers eventually rallied for their third straight win.

Pittsburgh begins the second half of the season next Monday against reeling Kansas City and plays 5 of its final eight at Heinz Field, where the Steelers have been dominant in recent years.
