Trumbull County courts consolidation on hold

Updated:

BROOKFIELD, Ohio - Trumbull County Commissioners have approved a one year lease extension for the Eastern District Court in Brookfield facility at its meeting on Wednesday.

The annual lease will cost the county $48,626.16, with an option to sign on to a second and third year lease if desired.

While the courts could be consolidated to save the county money, Commissioner Frank Fuda says further discussions need to take place with Judge Tom Campbell, the county's Central District Court judge in Cortland, to determine the proper plan.

"We thought combining the courts was a good idea and we wanted to make sure we had all the facts together," Fuda said.

Fuda says the number of judges that would then oversee the courts is one issue they would have to iron out.

"If they want to combine the courts and have one judge, the judges would have to, anybody wanting to run for that position could run and then it would be for a six year period of time," Fuda said.

The Ohio Supreme Court is allowing offenders sentenced to death to appeal directly to the high court when an application for DNA testing is rejected. The new rule adopted by the court Monday resulted from a decision last year in which the court declared part of a state law unconstitutional for limiting appeals by death row inmates seeking DNA tests.
