Shale gas processing plant being built in Columbiana County

Updated:

HANOVERTON, Ohio - A new shale gas processing plant is being built in Columbiana County.

Wednesday night residents in the Hanoverton area attended an open house at United High School to get information about the plant.

The plant will gather all the natural gas taken from the area and separate the dry gas from the liquids.

The liquids will be piped to locations near the coast and the gas will be sold off.

"We'll separate butane and ethane. The natural gas liquids are characterized as ethane, butane and propane. You buy propane to burn in your gas drill at home," said Les Smith with Momentum Energy. "We're just providing the equipment and infrastructure necessary to separate those liquids and get them to market."

The plant and pipelines are part of a $900 million investment in the area. It is expected to employ 20 to 30 people locally when it finishes next June.

The Kensington plant will process 600 million feet of natural gas each day.
