9-year-old dies after being struck by a hit and run driver in Salem

Updated:

SALEM, Ohio - A nine-year-old girl has died after being struck by a hit and run driver as she tried to cross the street in Salem.

A business owner heard what he says was someone gunning the engine to get away from the scene. "I came out right after it happened. I heard screaming and stuff. A shoe was in the middle of the street and another shoe was across the street. She slid or got pushed almost 30 feet from where it happened," said Brandon Mohr, owner of State Street Tattoo.

The owner of tattoo parlor tells 21 News it was about 9:20 p.m. Friday night when a young girl was crossing the street. He said it was dark at the time, however the street is extremely well lit and he doesn't see how the driver failed to see her.

Salem Police Sergeant John Sheets says the driver of a black Chevy S-10 called police Saturday morning.

"We had a phone call this morning from a driver who claimed that he was the driver of the vehicle and we have at this time impounded the vehicle. It was processed by BCI (Bureau of Criminal Investigation) and the driver was spoken to," Sergeant Sheets said.

The victim attended Reilly Elementary School. School officials say they will have counselors on hand to help students.

People who knew Olivia say she was a sweet girl with lots of friends.

As the community mourns, they are wondering who could leave a child in the road.

Charges have not yet been filed against the driver.
