Youngstown couple celebrates 50 years of marriage by getting healthy together

Updated:

CANFIELD, Ohio - Twenty four weeks ago Paul and Dorothy Pegues fit just fine into clothes that are now several sizes larger than what they wear today.

"I was 382 pounds and I never wanted to be 400 and I said no. I know that if I kept going the way I was going, being a former football coach also and played sports here in Youngstown and semi-pro, I knew it was going to be another heart attack or a stroke," said Bishop Paul Pegues of Youngstown.

Motivated by the weight loss of fellow church members Mark and Julie Owens, the Pegues's decided it was time to make a change.

They started, under the direction of the Owens, a 12 week weight loss challenge at the church and the pounds started coming off. They learned how to read labels, how to make better food choices and the importance of being active.

"I was on board too because we had both gotten a little too overweight and we got with Mark and Julie and the first 12 week program and he had lost 50 and I had lost 30 and we are in our second 12 week program," said Dorothy Pegues of Youngstown.

Now they're down a combined 125 pounds and have become motivators to other members of their church and community.

Because of the interest in the 12 week weight loss course, the Christian Life Center plans on hosting another challenge. You can contact either Mark or Julie Owens at 330-989-0977 to learn more.
