RG3 voted Redskins captain for rest of season

Updated:

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Robert Griffin III has a new title: team captain.

Coach Mike Shanahan said Wednesday that the rookie quarterback has been voted as a captain by the Washington Redskins offensive players.

Shanahan typically lets the players vote for an initial set of captains before the season, then takes another vote around the midpoint of the schedule to add more captains to serve the rest of the year.

Griffin joins left tackle Trent Williams as the captains on offense. Barry Cofield and Stephen Bowen were added to London Fletcher on defense. Lorenzo Alexander remains the sole special teams captain.

Shanahan said he doesn't believe he's previously had a rookie captain.

Griffin and the Redskins host the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
